In 1992, when it decided to replace PVC by PET, the bottled water industry started a market revolution! This new packaging material is completely neutral and contains neither bisphenol A nor phthalates. PET was the result of a large-scale research project and has remarkable properties:
Flexible, lightweight and neutral, PET plastic made it possible to reduce the weight of bottles and thereby reduce the environmental impact of transportation
As PET is 100% recyclable, it offers water bottles the chance of a second life. After the empty plastic bottle is put out for recycling by the consumer, it is then transformed into a new plastic object.
The water bottle: recycling champion!
Water bottles are different to most other types of packaging as they are fully recyclable: from the PET plastic bottle itself to its HDPE (high density polyethylene) cap.
Consumers can send bottles for recycling using their home or shared recycling points. This gives PET plastic bottles the possibility of a new life. They are transformed into a new plastic material that can be used to produce various everyday items, such as pens, polar fleeces, duvets and insulating materials, or even new PET bottles!
In 2009, SOURCES ALMA decided to make a more direct contribution to recycling by opening its own preform production plant using recycled PET.
Reducing the weight of packaging
Over the last 20 or so years, SOURCES ALMA has been working to reduce the weight of its bottles and its packaging. Lighter bottles = less PET used! These advances were made possible through investment in research and development and industrial know-how.
For example, 1.5L Thonon bottles weighed 45g in 1993 but only 23.1g in 2013. The weight of packaging film was reduced from 80g in 1995 to 45g in 2013 and then the weight of the pallet cover was reduced from 120g in 1998 to 90g in 2013.
Minimising the environmental impact of transportation
SOURCES ALMA does everything it can to work in a sustainable, responsible and efficient way. This is why we opt for optimal transportation and shipping solutions, which reduce our environmental impact :
We have Cristaline plants in several regions to provide coverage of the entire country, thus reducing transportation needs and ensuring the product reaches our clients in less time.
Rail transport is more ecologically sound and therefore constitutes one of our main priorities.
We have increased the quantity of goods loaded into each truck by increasing the number of bottles per pallet. More goods per truck = fewer CO2 emissions!
